Mrs. Kimberly Roeker
Lead Teacher, 2nd Grade Teacher, 3rd Grade – Bible, Science, Social Studies
Phonics, Language, Reading, and Spelling: Students will review all phonics sounds previously learned but at a much faster pace. Students are incorporating these sounds into their vocabulary and writing skills. We use the A Beka Curriculum along with A – Z Reading for these subjects.
Writing: We will be using the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing for our curriculum. The students will be exploring creative writing skills and they really enjoy crafting their own stories to share with the world.
Handwriting: We use a combination of curriculums and typically start cursive writing by the end of the school year. Students are fine tuning their print writing while being guided through bible verses in their work.
Math: Students will be using the Houghton Mifflin Go Math curriculum. We are using many manipulatives for our math lessons to strengthen the student’s ability to see math concepts in a tangible way. Areas that we address are addition and subtraction to 4 digits, time; calendar, measurement, money, multiplication, fractions, geometry, division, and word problems.
Bible: Students will use the ACSI curriculum titled God and My Actions. We will use characters from the Bible to learn how to live by applying God’s Word to our life. Students will be memorizing verses as part of the curriculum.
History/Science/Health: The A Beka curriculum material is utilized for these subjects along with FOSS Kits and other science kits purchased from educational companies. The students will rotate through lessons and themes for all 3 subjects. We will be working with science labs and on the scientific process. For history, we will look at early American History including Native Americans, famous historical people, maps, economics, government, and geography. For health the focus is on hygiene and safety along with making responsible choices.
Specials: Other opportunities for learning are provided with classes in Chapel, Physical Education, Computer, Library, Art, and Music.
2nd Graders also participate in the local Spelling Bee, Speech Competition, and Art Fair.
