Mrs. Michelle Schauer

3rd Grade Teacher

I am honored to be part of the team at Pine Harbor Christian Academy. My name is Michelle Schauer and I am the 3rd Grade Teacher at PHCA. I received my Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Early Education. I attended our academy as a 7th & 8th grader and it’s a blessing to be teaching here now! I live in Hastings with my husband and 3 sons, Hunter, Garrett and Nolan.

It is such a privilege to be one of the teachers at Pine Harbor Christian Academy, and I look forward to meeting you!

Third grade is a wonderful year as the children are excited about gaining independence and developing their curiosity about how the world works around them. We use the following curriculum for 3rd grade:

Language Arts, Reading, Spelling and Vocabulary: We use the Reading A to Z curriculum paired with the A Beka curriculum for these subjects. The curriculum used for vocabulary practice is Wordly Wise.

Writing: The 3rd grade will be piloting a new curriculum for PHCA called Being a Writer. The students will be exploring creative writing as well as personal narratives. I have experience with this program and I am looking forward to implementing it at our school.

Handwriting: The 3rd graders will focus on cursive writing. We use online resources along with our current Bible and spelling curriculums to fine tune these writing skills.

Math: Students will be using the Houghton Mifflin Go Math! curriculum. We are using manipulatives for our math lessons to strengthen the student’s ability to understand math concepts in a tangible way. Areas that we address are addition and subtraction to 10, 000, graphs, multiplication, division, fractions, measurement (time, length, volume, mass, perimeter, area), and geometry.

The 3rd grade and 2nd grade classes are combined in the afternoons for the following subjects. These classes are taught by Kimberly Roeker, who teaches the 2nd grade Language Arts and Math classes in the mornings.

Bible: Students will use the ACSI curriculum. In 3rd grade, we study the life of Jesus and how to become disciples. The curriculum focus is on the New Testament and follows the life of Paul.

History/Science/Health: A Beka curriculum material, FOSS Kits and other Science kits from educational companies plus unit studies from Science A to Z are utilized for these subjects. The students will rotate through lessons and themes for all 3 subjects. We will be working with science labs and on the scientific process. We will study all 3 areas of science (physical, earth, life). In history, we will explore American history including citizenship, communication, maps, economics, government, and geography. For health class, we will focus on hygiene and safety with making responsible choices.

Specials: Other opportunities for learning are provided with classes in Chapel, physical education, computer, library, art, and music.

The 3rd graders also participate in the local spelling bee, speech competition, and art fair.
